School Library Information Specialist Graduate Certificate


This graduate certificate is for any new student, or currently or previously enrolled student at the University of Tennessee, who has a Master’s in Library or Information Sciences from a program accredited by the American Library Association. The certificate, in combination with a master’s degree and the successful completion of the School Librarian Praxis exam and the edTPA for School Librarians/Library Specialists or an alternative assessment, will allow students to become certified as PreK-12 school librarians in Tennessee.

Admission Standards / Procedures


A completed online application must be received by the Graduate School, and the applicant must meet the School of Information Sciences graduate program standards, including:

  • An undergraduate GPA of 3.25 or higher;
  • A 400-700 word written statement of your career objectives
  • Letters of recommendation from 3 persons qualified to judge academic and/or professional qualities
  • Resume

The GRE is not required.

Applicants with a master’s degree from a college or university accredited by the American Library Association must request a transcript evaluation to ascertain exactly what courses need to be completed for the certificate and licensure as school librarian in Tennessee.

Academic Standards


A minimum 3.0 GPA must be earned in all certificate courses.

Credit Hours Required


 A minimum of 12 graduate credit hours and a maximum of 23 graduate credit hours.

Required courses will differ for individual students, depending on what courses they have previously taken for their initial MSIS degree.

Non-Course Requirements


In order to obtain the State of Tennessee teaching license and the PreK-12 endorsement for school libraries, students must also pass the Praxis Library Media Specialty exam (5312) and the edTPA assessment for School Librarians/Library Specialists. Job-embedded practitioners must pass the Praxis 5312 but are not required to take the edTPA. They must complete a summative evaluation with their supervisors.
